Chinese student visa (X1)
Guidance for students whose programme lasts longer than 180 days. Requirements differ by visa centre, university and nationality, so always check the official guidance for the visa centre that serves you.
The basics
- For programmes longer than 180 days, the student visa route is generally the X1.
- An X1 holder must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering China.
- Your university issues the admission notice and the JW201 or JW202 form that the visa application relies on.
Core documents
- Valid passport and a copy of the passport information page
- Completed visa application form
- Recent passport photograph
- University admission notice
- JW201 or JW202
- Proof of legal stay or residence, if you apply outside your country of nationality
- Financial evidence where required (bank statements, proof of funds, scholarship documents or a sponsor declaration)
- Previous Chinese visa or passport documents, where applicable
- Any additional documents the visa centre asks for after review
Check before you apply
- Your name and passport number match across all documents
- Your date of birth is the same on every document
- Spellings are consistent, or you can explain and evidence any difference
- Your passport is valid for the required period and has blank visa pages
- You can attend a visa interview if one is requested
Preparing for a visa interview
If you are asked to attend an interview, officers may ask about your studies, funding and plans. The goal of preparation is to be clear and consistent with your documents. Answer truthfully: OGVIA never coaches false answers.
